Annual check up |
Women should consider an annual visit to their GP for a general health check up. This will usually include checks of your blood pressure, skin and urine, as well as a breast examination.
Pap tests
It might also include a Pap smear, which is recommended for most women from their late teens to about 70 years of age. Some women need to have this test done annually. The Pap smear is a vital preventative measure in the fight against cervical cancer. The test can show the smallest changes in the cells lining the cervix and they can be removed easily before they become cancerous.
Breast cancer
Breast cancer is also a big problem in our community and affects 1 in 15 women. It is really important to check your breasts regularly for any signs of change. If you are not sure how to do this properly, your doctor will show you.
Mammograms
Mammograms (breast x-rays) are recommended every two years for women between the age of 50 and 70. They have been shown to improve the early detection of breast cancer, when it is easier to treat successfully.
Pregnancy
If you are planning a pregnancy, it is wise to make an appointment with your GP, as there are a few health issues you need to consider before becoming pregnant.
For example, do you have enough folic acid in your diet? Folic acid is one of the B group vitamins and has been shown to greatly reduce the risk of spina bifida in babies.
Or, are you immune to rubella? This is generally a mild illness in children and adults, but if an expectant mum catches rubella in the first ten weeks of pregnancy, it is devastating to the unborn child.
Contraception
Your GP can also advise you on your contraceptive options during your child-bearing years. When you reach the menopause, you may be affected by the changes taking place in your body and your GP can discuss the available treatment options with you.
